This policy explains how Compare Data Group Ltd (Companies House No. 16954162, registered in England and Wales), operating Compare Builders, collects, uses and protects your personal data. We are the data controller for the information you submit through this site.
1. The short version
- We collect what we need to match you with a verified builder — trade, postcode, budget bracket, timeline, readiness and your contact details.
- We never sell your data. Your contact details are only released to the single builder who wins the sealed-bid auction for your project.

2. What we collect
From homeowners using the funnel
- Project data — trade, sub-type, approximate size, UK postcode, budget bracket, timeline, readiness state.
- Contact details — first name, surname, email address, mobile number. We verify the mobile by SMS to keep junk enquiries out.
- Consent records — versioned text of the consent you agreed to, with the timestamp.
- Technical data — anonymous device, browser and referrer information for performance and abuse-prevention.
From builders applying for accreditation
- Company details (name, Companies House number), service areas, trades, capacity.
- Insurance details, trade-body memberships, portfolio summary, customer references.
- The principal’s name, email, mobile, and DBS check result where work is in occupied homes.
- Payment details for the accreditation fee, handled by Stripe.
3. Why we collect it
We process your personal data on three lawful bases under UK GDPR:
- Contract — to provide the matching service you requested when you submitted a project, and to administer the marketplace for builders.
- Legitimate interest — to verify builder identity against public records (Companies House, HMRC, trade-body member lists), and to operate the platform safely and free of fraud.
- Consent — for marketing communications (you can opt out at any time) and for non-essential cookies.
4. Who we share it with
Your contact details are released to one verified builder — the winner of the sealed-bid auction for your project. We never sell your data to third parties. We share limited data with the following processors, each bound by a data-processing agreement:
- Supabase — encrypted database hosting (EU region).
- Resend — transactional email delivery.
- Twilio — SMS verification of mobile numbers.
- Stripe — payment processing for builder accreditation fees and lead payments.
- Vercel — application hosting (EU region).
5. How long we keep it
- Active project data — for as long as your project is open in our system.
- Submitted projects — retained for 6 years from submission to comply with statutory record-keeping obligations.
- Builder accreditation records — retained for the duration of the builder’s active status plus 6 years.
- Marketing data — until you withdraw consent, then deleted within 30 days.
6. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Have inaccurate data corrected.
- Have your data erased (subject to our statutory obligations).
- Restrict or object to processing.
- Have your data ported to another provider.
- Withdraw consent at any time (where consent is the lawful basis).
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office.
